Gold Country Mini-Retreat

May 17, 2025

Auburn, CA

Since 2010 we've held annual Gold Country mini-retreats in beautiful Auburn, CA, nestled in the Sierra foothills. Like our other mini-retreats, this is a one-day event that combines discussion of a book (usually nonfiction) with a screening of a related film. There is a small charge, and lunch is provided.

On the morning of May 17, 2025 we'll gather for coffee and treats at Pioneer Methodist Church in Auburn, California, and then sit down to discuss The Boys in the Boat by Daniel James Brown, the remarkable story of the University of Washington rowing team's quest to compete in the 1936 Berlin Olympics. After lunch we'll view its 2023 film adaptation, directed by George Clooney. There will be a small fee to help cover the event costs.

Registration for this exciting event will open soon! More details, with a registration link, will be posted on this site as soon as they're available.

To keep people's references by page number consistent during the book discussion, we recommend that you read the Penguin edition, ISBN-13 978-0143125471.

In recent years, the Gold Country Mini-Retreat has featured discussions of Killers of the Flower Moon by David Grann; The Brothers by Steven Kinzer; Seven Years in Tibet by Heinrich Harrer; Queen of the Desert by Gertrude Bell; and The Glass Castle by Jeannette Walls; along with film adaptations or related films.
